Hyper Beam SNAPP Review
(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really a full fledged game review as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a certain game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know whether it’s worth your time/money or not.)
So, Rinikulous Games sophomore title released on the App Store this week. The game is called Hyper Beam and is a space themed endless survival game with a unique twist. I’ve been playing (close to) the final version for a couple weeks now and have been having a blast.
The object of Hyper Beam is survival. Survive and kill to be honest. You control two ships that carry a light beam between the two of them. That beam is your weapon in this game. You will come across waves of enemies ranging in all shapes and sizes. Your job is to trap these enemies in your beam. Some enemies only take one hit, while others need several hits to destroy their shields.
What really makes this game stand out is the control scheme. You control each of the two ships independently with your thumbs. You can move your ships wherever you want as long as you don’t get hit. If you make it far enough, you will move onto the next “Sector” with each one getting more and more difficult. It’s fairly easy the first couple Sectors, but once you hit Sector 3, things get pretty crazy. After so many kills, you will build up “Hyper Mode” which is kind of like 5 seconds of ass kicking with no repercussions. Like is said, the object is to just survive as long as you can before your inevitable demise.
You can also unlock different colors in the game and different beams that all have their own unique Hyper Mode. So, there’s a little more incentive to keep playing besides just a high score. I always like when developers add little things like that in games.
Definitely check out Hyper Beam next time you’re on the App Store. We’ve been having a lot of fun with it so far. Even while it was still in beta, a handful of the SNAPPZILLA Family were having a mini “SNAPP Challenge” to see who could survive the longest. I’m pretty sure it was @Doomfan with the longest run, but I’m pretty sure he’s not human.
