Coffee & Swiping: W/E May 21, 2017
(Coffee & Swiping is a weekly news-y/blogg-y article about the past week’s news/drama in the mobile gaming industry. It’s basically an excuse for Noen to ramble on about anything and everything that has to do with nothing.)
Gooood Morning SNAPP Family! Welcome to yet another Monday morning with me! Well, technically, it’s afternoon by the time most of you read this. I usually start gathering info on Sunday evening and start writing around 6am Monday morning, but by the time I finish up and get it published, it’s like 11am. I guess it’s still considered “morning” until 11:59am. Interesting stuff huh?
On the topic of “interesting stuff”. I’m on my 5th night with practically no sleep. There has been a loud ass fucking tree frog in my backyard making this loud ass noise ALL NIGHT! It starts around 10:00pm and goes until the sun comes up. Haha, I know this isn’t game related, but this is my LIFE right now! OMG! It’s been so horrible! I’ve been out back with a flashlight and a net at 2am some nights! I’ve climbed the tree out back looking for it! I’ve downloaded other frog noises and played them on my phone to try and scare it off! I’m going fucking crazy!! I guess it’s doing some mating call, so of course it’s horny. And you know like most guys, he ain’t gonna stop until he gets a little froggy action. I’m about to buy a female frog and throw it out back, just so he can get laid and shut the hell up! It’s seriously LOUD! It echoes through the neighborhood. And it’s in MY BACK YARD!!
Alright, back to gaming…….
As far as SNAPPZILLA as a whole goes, things are doing well. I took a couple days off last week to work on some new stuff for the site and to kind of “reorganize”, so it was a fairly quiet week for us. We have a lot new stuff coming down the pipeline though, so stay tuned.
So, last week was yet another great week for new games on the App Store. It started off fairly slow with just a few games releasing on Wednesday. We also didn’t have any big wave come through like usual. Games just started “seasoning” the App Store here and there late Wednesday night and into Thursday. We had Old Man’s Journey, Miles & Kilo, Beholder, Arkanoid vs Space Invaders, and a ton more. So, what was I playing you say? How kind of you to ask. Here’s some of the games that have stolen my attention so far……
I played quite a bit of Parking Mania 2 over the weekend. It’s a big step from the original, that’s for sure. The visuals are the first thing I noticed. The game is 3D now. There is also an “open world” feel to the game which is cool. You can even upgrade and change up the looks of your vehicles. Of course, it’s F2P, so everything comes from random pick ups and a “card” system. It’s still a pretty fun game.
I played through Old Man’s Journey pretty quickly on Friday. It’s not that long of a game. I think it’s only around an hour long. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to live up to the hype for me. Yea, it was fun, but I guess I was expecting something a little more. I don’t want to give away too much in case you haven’t played or finished it yet. It was good, just not great.
Stickman Skate Battle has been a lot of fun. I played it a little during the beta and liked it a lot. I love skateboarding games though. I guess because I skated for years as a kid, so I’m always pumped to play skateboarding games. It has the usual “stickman” flavor to the game that Djinnworks is always good for. This one is F2P, so a lot is locked up front. So, you’ve got to work your way up to unlock different tricks, boards, parks, etc. They did a pretty good job with the controls. That was the one thing I was really worried about. It’s really easy to pull off tricks. The one thing I don’t really care for is the “fee” you have to pay for each run. If you are broke in the game, you’re kind of screwed unless you buy an IAP or wait for a free daily gift. If you manage your money though, it’s not even an issue.
Ghouls n’ Ghosts Mobile is pretty much exactly what you would expect it to be. It’s the original GnG game on mobile. No extras except an easier “Casual Mode”. I think Capcom really missed the boat on these original games they have been releasing. Even if they charged a little more for it, i would have been happy with some backstories, artwork, etc. on each game, but what can you do. I can’t complain too much. It’s the original game for a buck. I think I paid around 50 bucks for it when it originally released. (Still have it too!)
I was never a Power Rangers fan back in the day. I think I was a little too old when they first got big in the states. I’ve tried watching them recently and just can’t get into the bad acting. I still picked up Chroma Squad over the weekend and I’ve got to say, it’s pretty damn good! I’m sure it’s probably a little better if you’re actually a Power Rangers fan, but even if you’re not, it’s still a solid turn-based tactical RPG. There’s nothing that makes it really stand out from other RPGs, but if you’re looking for something new, it’s not bad at all. I will say that there is a lot of text in the game. I guess most RPGs do, but this one tries to be funny and most of the time the jokes fall flat. I do like that you are starting off as a small show and the further you get, the more money and fans you get. Which of course, allows you to buy better props and set pieces.
As usual, I’ll leave a few games out for reviews. I did play a couple non-iOS games on Sunday. I played a bit of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse for 3DS. If you haven’t jumped on the Shantae bandwagon yet, you need to. You can get Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on iOS for pretty cheap. There’s even a F2P version.
I also played a little bit of Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4. I originally played about half of it on XboxOne when it first released and then decided to replay it on PS4 because it was the 20th Anniversary version and had a bunch of extra shit. I am a HUGE Lara Croft/Tomb Raider fan. It’s my all time favorite franchise. I collect just about anything Tomb Raider. (I even have a licensed Tomb Raider slot machine from Japan.) So, if anybody reading this has anything collecting dust in their closet or something…..*wink* *wink* Actually, I collect anything that has to do with the history of video games.
I think that’s about it. I played a little bit of Slain: Back from Hell and Salt and Sanctuary on the PSVITA (I LOVE my Vita!), but SNAPPZILLA is about iOS games (for now), so I won’t bore you guys anymore about that stuff. Anyway, that’s about it for me. I’ll give everyone a week off from my rants. If there’s anything you guys and gals want to see in Coffee & Swiping or see come back, shoot me an email or DM on Twitter. I know that I kind of skipped over the news the past few weeks so I can put that back in if you want. I honestly don’t really have a format for C&S like I used to. I just like talking I guess.
Anyway, have a great week family! Keep on swiping………..oh, and fuck you tree frog!!!
