Goooood Morning everyone! Welcome to another start of the week with yours truly! That is, unless you’re one of those people that start their week’s on Sundays. That’s just weird.
Anyway, fire up those coffee makers and oil up those pecs, because we have a lot to talk about this morning.
We had two big things going on last week. GDC and the Nintendo Switch launch. Both of them things took up most of everyone’s attention last week. I’m sure everyone has heard enough about both of them, so I’ll just touch on them a little bit this morning. (That’s right. Just touch on it really softly. Cup it a little. Nobody has to know.)
Welp, Nintendo’s new Switch console released last week and I have no clue what to think about it. Like, should we consider it a mobile/handheld console or a home console? Should we start covering it on SNAPPZILLA because it is technically a tablet? Should we even be spreading our wings that far or just stick to iOS? I do play a lot of other games, so there’s a lot that i could talk about or review, but like i said, i don’t know if we should be spreading our wings that far or not. Maybe I’ll just start with gradually going into Android games first. (As you can see, I have a LOT of plans for expanding SNAPPZILLA.) I’m hoping to pick up the Switch this week if I run across it at the store, so I guess I’ll know more then whether it’s “SNAPPworthy” or even has an indie scene yet. I know Nintendo has the whole “nindes” thing. But seriously, if you guys and gals have a preference, let me know. I’m kind of just thinking out loud here.
As far as GDC goes, unfortunately I couldn’t afford to get there this year. Hopefully by next year, SNAPPZILLA will be successful enough for one of us to be able to go. Our buddy, @TigerrrUppercut was actually there over the weekend. Maybe I can get him to do a little GDC recap article for us. If not, I’ve been going through all the trailers and news and I might put together some of my favorites of the announcements.
Sooooo, let’s talk about that App Store last week.
Originally, I thought it was going to be a pretty quiet week. I figured with GDC going on (and possibly the launch of the Switch), a lot of developers we’re going to hold off on releasing their games due to them either being gone at GDC, or the fear of their game getting lost in the sea of GDC news. That seemed to be the issue on Wednesday. Only a few games had released by nightfall. Then all the sudden Thursday morning it and it was an avalanche of indie games! We had the well known, The Escapists game finally get ported over to iOS, the stressful, Mudd Masher by Atoii released, a bunch of new puzzle platformers like Pan-Pan and After the End: Forsaken Destiny and plenty more. The game that seemed to get most of my attention over the weekend was the new one from Moof Games, Smash Club: Streets of Shmeenies. So, what have we learned from all of this? Pretty much that I have absolutely no clue what I’m talking about when it comes to what kind of week it’s going to be on the App Store. Going over the non-GDC news, we had Capcom announcing that they will be porting over some of their classics to iOS this year. Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando, Ghosts n’ Goblins, Ghouls n’ Ghosts, and 1942. All will have the word “mobile” at the end of each title and come with classic and casual modes and of course leaderboards. Now, I know we used to have Ghost n’ Goblins and Ghosts n’ Ghouls on iOS awhile back and I could have swore we had some version of 1942 also, but I think they were all just standard ports with generic control pads kind of slapped on the screen. They worked ok, but if Capcom is actually going to put more effort into the ports this time, then I’m all for it. I’ve been dying to play Commando again. I loved that game back in the day.
Another one I’m really looking forward to is a game called, Hardway by Digital Melody Games. It’s another endless driver type of arcade game, but instead of you driving a vehicle endlessly, you are laying down the road ahead of the vehicle. There are 8 different worlds to play in and over 30 different vehicles to unlock. Now, I know the App Store is full of these arcadey endless games, but it’s nice seeing someone thinking outside the box.
Limbic Software FINALLY has announced a release date for their newest game, Zombie Gunship Survival. It’s been in soft launch for what feels like forever now. Limbic stated that the new title will release in May of this year. There’s no exact date, but at least we have it narrowed down to 4 weeks. I’ve been playing the soft launched version for a couple months now and I can say that the game is very well done and a hell of a lot of fun. Yea, it’s F2P, so you’re going to have to deal with some timers and different currencies, but it hasn’t gotten in the way of gameplay too much so far. It’s “tasteful” F2P.
Speaking of soft launches (and I guess F2P), the new Power Rangers: Legacy Wars soft launched last week. I never really got into the Power Rangers. They were after my time I guess, but I did try out the game over the weekend. (I don’t discriminate when it comes to games!) It’s a fighting game with a kind of unique simplified gameplay mechanic. Your moves are determined by a constantly rising “mana number” kind of like in castle defense games. Each move uses X amount of power to use, so there’s a little bit of strategy involved instead of just button mashing. It’s a pretty looking game, but just didn’t have enough to keep me interested. Maybe if I liked Power Rangers, I would have appreciated it a little more, but there are just too many good fighters on the App Store for me to stick with it. That’s my On The Radar Mini-SNAPP Review I guess.
The last one that soft launched last week was War Wings by Sixjoy. War Wings is a really cool looking real-time PVP dogfighting game. The game claims to have literally hundreds of planes to fly and customize. It’s all WWII era planes, so I’m a little weary on that number. I didn’t know there were “hundreds” of different plane styles back then. The game has won several awards already and the screenshots do look pretty good. I have it downloaded on my device (1.51 GB) right now, but haven’t had a chance to play it yet. I’ll dig into it later on this morning if you are interested at all.
Fireproof Games just announced that the newest edition to The Room series titled, The Room: Old Sins will be releasing “late 2017”. It’s still awhile before we can get our hands on the game, but it will be playable at the end of this month at the EGX Rezzed Expo in London if you’re in the area (James?!). If you haven’t played any of The Room games, I can’t recommend them enough. All three games are great in their own way. I’m actually playing through the whole series over again right now.
Alright. That’s about it for last week. If you haven’t noticed, things have been ramping up at SNAPPZILLA lately. We are almost a month away from our 1 Year “SNAPP Day” Anniversary! It’s crazy that it’s been a year already. It’s been an amazing journey so far. I think that we’ve just about made our spot in the industry and shown everyone that we’re here to stay. Like I’ve said before, we have plenty of fresh ideas for the future. I know I’d really like to convert Coffee & Swiping into a YouTube show or even a podcast because there’s so much more I’d like to talk about without turning this piece into a short story every Monday. I’ve been doing a lot of work and practice shows on the side lately and trying to learn some editing before I’m comfortable going live.
