(Coffee & Swiping is a weekly news-y/blogg-y article about the past week’s news/drama in the mobile gaming industry. It’s basically an excuse for Noen to ramble on about anything and everything that has to do with nothing.)
Umm……oh, Goooood Monday Morning Gamers! Welcome to another Coffee & Swiping with your sexual chocolate, Noen! It’s been a cray-cray week, so pour yourself a cup of coffee, grab the hand lotion, and let’s head to the bathroom.
Let’s see…….What happened last week. Oh, wait, EVERYTHING! Of course, the App Store was dropping indie bombs on us on the daily with the whole “Indie Celebration” thing going on. Seriously, it’s been crazy! I’ve done nothing but try to catch up on mobile games for the past couple weeks. I did play about an hour of Rise of the Tomb Raider for the PS4. It’s taking me forever to get through it! Oh, and I modded my XboxOne controller. That’s about it for my non-mobile gaming life. If I’m not playing mobile games, I’m playing console/handheld/retro games, or I’m reading/writing about them. It’s funny. In the early days of the App Store, I was playing mobile games in between console games. Now, it’s seemed to have flipped the script. I’m playing my consoles in between mobile games. I guess it’s not that bad of a time to be living in where there are actually too many games to play. Anyway, enough about the non-mobile stuff.
Like I said, with the Indie Celebration going on the past week (and this week), new games have been releasing on a daily basis, not to mention the tidal wave of games that have been releasing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I’ve been non-stop all week! So, let’s go over some of the games I was able to sink some time into.
SpinnyWings is a pretty fun one touch game by the developers of Any Landing. It takes a little while to get the hang of the plane always turning to the left. My only issue is that it seems to take forever to collect enough “balloons” to get a new plane. I still haven’t gotten a second one!
Westy West is an excellent Crossy-Style game. I did a SNAPP Review of it over the weekend, so I won’t say much else about it. You can read it here.
Golf Zero is an iOS must-have by “The Mad Scientist” behind Wrassling and Dunkers. I’ve been playing this game off and on since it was a wee little beta baby, but it’s nice playing the finished product. It’s just an awesome mashup of a platformer and golf. Yea, it’s weird, but it works.
Dirt Xtreme is a pretty fun online multiplayer motocross game by the developers that brought us the Trial Xtreme series. I did a SNAPP Review on this one also, so you can read that here.
Ghosts’n Goblins Mobile is an alright port of the original game. Just like I said last week for 1942 Mobile, so much has come out since these games, that it’s tough to tell people go and get it. Yea, it’s GnG on mobile. That’s about it. Capcom didn’t really add much to it. It could have been so much more if they cleaned it up and added maybe some cutting room floor levels, original artwork, whatever, and kind of made it a “homage” to the game. Instead, it’s just Ghosts’n Goblins with some standard touchscreen controls on your phone
Llama Llama Spit Spit is pretty fun. I don’t know what it is, but these Nickelodeon/Game Shakers games are pretty fun! Maybe it’s the fact that my kids watch the show and I’m forced to sit through it and the shows are based around the real games that release. So, it’s kind of cool actually playing the games that are in the show. I know. I know.
Sunday, I spent a lot of time on the bigger games like, OXENFREE, Pavilion, and The Big Journey. I’m still pretty early on in all three to give too much of an opinion, but I’ll just say that The Big Journey is really fun, OXENFREE is something you’re going to need some alone time with a set of good headphones. The story is amazing. I didn’t get but maybe 20 minutes in on Pavilion. It released last week as an iPhone Only game and I was holding off until a universal update due to the small details in the game. I didn’t expect it to be updated this soon though! So, yea. I’m just starting on it pretty much. It’s cool so far though!
Alright, alright. On to the rest of the mobile world…….
The biggest news to come out of last week is of course, Apple creating an entirely new storefront dedicated to indie developers/games. It’s awesome opening up the App Store and *BOOM* being blasted in the face with rows and rows of some of the best games created for iOS. For years developers have struggled with getting exposure on the App Store, so this is a big deal. Of course, I can’t help but be a little frustrated. Especially hearing people say, “Finally! A place where I can find new indie games!” Umm….ahem. *waiving our hands in the air* We’ve been doing this for almost a year now. But, just like developers, we struggle with trying to get exposure also. In all honesty, all that really matters is that these great games get in as many hands as possible. Whether people find it on the App Store, our website, or someone else’s site. It’s about the games. Now, I’ve heard the storefront is permanent and I’ve heard that it’s still just a 2 week promotion. So, your guess is as good as mine. Apple works in strange ways!
In other news, Telltale Games’s CEO Kevin Bruner stepped down from his position of two years and will be replaced by co-founder and former CEO, Dan Conners. An email went out to the staff last week pretty much just saying it was his time to “pass the reins” and move on. I haven’t heard where he’s going next, but we wish him good luck.
German Developer, Goodgame Studio is laying off another 200 staff from the company. They had laid off 400 staff members last year. The layoffs were announced by head of the studio, Kai Wawrzinek to staff members via email. The reasoning for the layoff was the “highly competitive nature of the F2P space, increasing marketing budgets, and uncertainty of future success”. Goodgame still has a couple games on the App Store. The reason I mention this is because they have been putting out F2P “Social RPGs”. That is most likely the reason for the loss. Social RPGs are a dime a dozen. It’s a flooded market in an already over saturated platform. People need to start thinking outside of the box and not just “playing it safe” and following the herd. If not, we are doomed. DOOMED I say!!
Hi-Rez Studios announced last week via Twitter that they will be putting their new game, Smite Rivals on hold. I guess it didn’t do very well in early testing and needs quite a bit of dev work. The team still has Smite Tactics in soft launch and plans to focus on that for now. Tactics is turned-based strategy games, while Rivals was more of a CCG Clash Royale style multiplayer Game. Again, the App Store is flooded with these CCG games since Clash Royale released, so I can’t say that I’m that sad about Rivals being put on hold. No offense to the dev team. I’m just not a big fan of card collecting games.
Before I start winding this party down, I have a couple of quick nuggets. The biggest nugget is that Rocketcat announced last week that Death Road To Canada releases this week!!!!!!!! I honestly can’t think of a game that I’ve waited this long for. It been years. So, yea. I’m pretty stoked for that. I’m a huge Rocketcat fan. Next is that if you have an android device, Meganoid 2017 is now in Early Access on Google Play. I just downloaded it, but haven’t played any yet. Another nugget is that Cube Escape: The Cave (by Rusty Lake) releases this week on the 23rd. I’m still way behind in the Cube Escape games, but I’m still happy to hear that another one is coming out. Another game releasing the same day is Construction Simulator 2. I know it may not be for some, but I’m really excited about it. I dug the first one. Who wouldn’t want to operate heavy machinery?? Last, but not least, the new game from the developer of Osteya Adventures, call Fingerboard is releasing tomorrow on the App Store. I’m always excited about skateboarding/fingerboarding games. I still play True Skate on almost a daily basis. (Psst! It’s the perfect game for when you’re on the toilet. Shh!)
Alright folks. I’m about out of coffee in my new mug. If you didn’t see on my Twitter, I got 2 new Coffee & Swiping coffee mugs!! Well, one is “technically” a bowl, but I’m going to use it for the big news days on C&S. Anyway, sorry this week ran kind of long. I guess I’m a little chatty this morning. Hopefully everyone has a great week and remember to keep on swiping…………
