(Coffee & Swiping is a weekly news-y/blogg-y article about the past week’s news/drama in the mobile gaming industry. It’s basically an excuse for Noen to ramble on about anything and everything that has to do with nothing.)
Goooooood Morning SNAPP Family and welcome to another Monday morning with yours truly!! It’s been a couple weeks since I last talked to you. I missed you guys and gals! I was actually planning on doing a Coffee & Swiping last week, but I was coming back from the inlaw’s place up in northern Michigan and had to pack up, do the drive, unpack, etc. Plus, I figured everyone probably had their own thing going on with the holiday and all. So, I bottled up all my sexy emotions and annoying rants and saved them for another week. So, fire up those coffee makers and grab the lube. This might take awhile……..
Alright. I’ll try and spare you the personal non-gaming related stuff that’s been going on with me the past two weeks. Although, I will give you an update on “Operation Tree Frog”. You know, because that’s pretty much been my fucking life outside of games lately. Those of you who don’t know, I had a weird frog that was hiding in my backyard “chirping” so loud, that it kept me up for like 7 nights straight. Well, I caught it and let it go in a kind of wetlands area about 2 blocks away. All was good for a couple days. We left town for 3 days last weekend only to come back to the damn frog again! And this time he brought a friend!! Needless to say, I got close to no sleep most of last week! I ended up finding and catching one of them inside my shed while cleaning it out last week and finally caught the other one while he was taking an afternoon stroll across the grassy knoll Friday night! I’ll just say that this time I wasn’t so nice to the little bastards. They won’t be coming back anytime soon unless it’s in my nightmares.
Now, onto gaming……
As far as SNAPPZILLA goes. Things have been a little quiet from us. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t been working. I’ve actually been working a lot lately. I’ve been doing a lot of “behind the scenes” stuff. Organizing, planning, working on YouTube, trying new ideas, etc. I still try and put out a review here and there along with the usual weekly articles when I get busy like this.
One new thing that you might have noticed is “SNAPP Releases”. With all the games that release every week (especially Wednesdays and Thursdays), I feel kind of bad blowing up everyone’s feed on social media. I’m sure it’s got to get annoying when you’re trying to read you’re feed and it’s nothing but SNAPPZILLA. So, I created separate accounts for Twitter and Instagram that are strictly new game releases. That way, I you don’t want all the game releases and just want the “regular” tweets and articles, you can now. It’s the best of both worlds (I think). So, make sure to follow @SNAPPReleases if you want to know when I find any new games released.
I didn’t have to use @SNAPPReleases very much last week though. The App Store was a little on the slower side. I’m guessing it had to do with the shorter holiday week. Maybe developers/publishers figured that people would be traveling or whatever and wouldn’t be buying games. It still wasn’t a bad week. I ended up finding quite a few great indie games that quietly released. Here’s some of last week’s AND this week’s games that took up most of my time recently.
One game I played was Fastlane: Road to Revenge from Space Ape. The game is pretty much a shmup on wheels. My biggest issue is the timer/energy system. You get 5 runs until your “gas” runs out and it takes like 30 mins per gas can to replenish! So, it’s like 2.5 hours you have to wait!! It’s fun while you’re playing, but the wait is just too damn long.
Another game I’m still playing today is Tappy Sky. I did a quick SNAPP Review of this last week, so I won’t say much besides it’s a shmup with Flappy Bird style controls and a clicker mashed into it. It’s definitely unique enough to give it a try.
Next up is Imprisoned Light. This one released earlier last week and is actually pretty damn cool. If any of you remember the old game, Muffin Knight, it plays a lot like that, but with power ups. Definitely worth picking up in my opinion.
I gave SUP Racing by Oh Bibi the old college try, but just couldn’t get into it. You all know that I love me some racing games, so I was kind of excited when this released last week. It ended up being another one of these lane-based racers where you’re just switching lanes back and forth like an endless runner. The multiplayer seemed to work fairly well and visually it’s nice, but I just didn’t care for it.
I actually kind of like the new Gameloft game, Iron Blade. Usually I pass up most of Gameloft’s games since they went F2P. Nothing against F2P, I just don’t like how they do it. Anyway, with the exception of all the different IAPs, timers, currency, Iron Blade is a pretty fun! I expected it to be just another hack & slash game with nice visuals, but it’s completely different. It’s more of a reaction-based game where it’s all about being quick enough to block, parry, and strike. It definitely surprised me with how much fun I was having.
One game that kind of let me down last week was Reckless Getaway 2 by Pixelbite. Don’t get me wrong, the game is fun, but it just felt like a lateral move to me. I know the visuals have changed and it’s more of an open world game compared to the linear maps on the original game, but it doesn’t feel bigger and better like most sequels are. It honestly just feels/looks like a completely different game with the Reckless Getaway name tacked onto it. It’s a fun little game, but just doesn’t feel like it should have the Reckless name on it.
Next up is Hyper Beam by Rinikulous Games. I did a SNAPP Review on this one also, so I won’t say much except that it’s been one of my go-to games all week. It’s just a fun high score chaser with a unique control scheme. Plus, there are a couple people I won’t mention that I have to beat before I decide to put this game down.
Last, but certainly not least is Rogue Wizards. Holy shit, I’ve played so much of this game since it released! Rogue Wizards is a rogue-lite dungeon crawler RPG with turn-based fighting. This game has gotten a lot of press lately, so there’s not much I can say that hasn’t already been said. But, as for me personally, I’ve been really digging it. I will say that there is a lot of grinding in the game, but it’s fun grinding to me. I actually love grinding in RPGs. Always have. It’s been a lot of dungeon crawling and heading back to town to sell my loot so I can upgrade and go back and do it all over again. It’s definitely been my “most played” game this week.
Alright. I’m running a little behind this morning it looks like. So, I’ll cut it off here. Have a great week family and remember to keep on swiping………
