Coffee & Swiping: W/E July 23, 2017
(Coffee & Swiping is a weekly news-y/blogg-y article about the past week’s news/drama in the mobile gaming industry. It’s basically an excuse for Noen to ramble on about anything and everything that has to do with nothing.)
Goooooood Morning SNAPP Family!! Welcome to the start of your week! Time to fire up those coffee makers and get out the “back massager”. I think we’re going to try something a little different in order to spice up our relationship.
Hopefully everyone had a great weekend! I’m going to change up some things this week (and going forward). I know Coffee & Swiping can get pretty lengthy most of the time. (I can’t help it! I like to talk!) I try and cover an entire week’s worth of mobile gaming news/drama, not to mention covering what’s going on with SNAPPZILLA, plus adding in games I’ve been playing and even what’s going on in my personal life. It’s just too much for one article. I can’t expect everyone to practically read a short story every Monday morning. (MAJOR props to the ones that actually do read it all the way through! You know who you are. *pickle*) It’s a lot of work putting together C&S every week. I mean a LOT of work. And every week I’m adding more and more. So, from now on I’ll only be covering the games I’ve played the last 7 days. Just my little corner of the site where I can talk over coffee about whatever games I’ve played……..unfiltered of course. Most likely I’ll be creating a weekly SNAPP News article out of this and eventually I’ll move some of it to YouTube once I can afford a new mic. (Any wealthy SNAPP Family members out in the crowd wanting to help out with that would really be appreciated! *wink* *wink*)
Oh, before I get into anything else. My new avatar by artist, Adam Foreman (@A4manArtist). I’m super happy how it turned out. I even look handsome in cartoon form! Special thanks to my partner in crime, James who actually set everything up.
(In all it’s glory!)
Now, let’s get into the past week of games I’ve gotten my dirty little hands into….
One game I’ve been playing and really liking is PPKP. This one actually released a little while ago, but started getting attention this week due to it getting featured on the App Store. It’s a unique mashup of 2-button fighting and city building that starts off pretty basic, but once you start figuring things out, the game really opens up. My only issue is the energy system (of course). You can burn through it pretty quick sometimes and then either wait or pay. It’s still a really fun game worth picking up.
Another one that released a while ago Zombie Fest. I did a SNAPP Review on it last week, so I won’t get into the details. You can read about it here.
Next up is Road to Valhalla. This game didn’t turn out to be as fun as I wanted it to be. It’s definitely got some polish to it and is actually narrated by the Metal God himself, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, but it’s a poorly designed note tapping game. You can’t see the notes in areas with them being so small and half the time they aren’t even in sync with the music. This one should only be picked up if you are a big Judas Priest fan and want the fanfare.
Now, onto Pixel Volley. This game is so damn fun! It’s pretty reminiscent of the physics sports games from Colin Lane, but that’s a good thing. It’s kind of a 2-on-2 volleyball game where you control your characters with a single button each. There are a ton of characters to unlock and 3 different championships to keep you busy. Honestly, it’s just plain stupid fun.
One game that actually surprised me was, Lyra’s Dream. It’s honestly just another endless faller, but it’s done really well. You unlock characters all with their own unique abilities, so each game kind of feels “different” in it’s own way. Not to mention, the game is beautiful to look at.
Oh boy. This next one has driven me crazy (in a good way). Leap On! by Flying Pants Games/Noodlecake. It’s a ridiculous high score chaser with some really cool rubber band physics. It was actually this week’s SNAPP Challenge and of course I got my ass handed to me by the end of the first day. I wasn’t even breaking 500 points before the usual suspects (@DoomFan, @Mike_AKD, @TigerrrUppercut) started killing it with 2 and 3 thousand points. Regardless, it’s a fun time killer and worth checking out if you’re into high score chasers. I would have liked to see a little something else added to the game like unlockable characters or abilities. Just something else to work toward besides a high score.
Last, but not least was the sequel to Mr. Jump, simply titled, Mr. Jump S. Hmm, how can I put this….I sucked at the first game, I suck at this game, and I’ll always suck at these games. They just aren’t for me. Apparently a lot of people like it though, so more power to them. It’s just not my cup of coffee.
Of course, I’ll leave a few out to review this week.
Alright, that’s about it for me this week. Wow! This feels so short to me! There’s so much else to talk about! It looks like I just might have to create a new weekly segment after all. Honestly, let me know what you guys think. Until then, keep it stiff and keep on swiping……..
