(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really a full fledged game review as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know whether it’s worth your time/money or not.)
Juanito Arcade Mayhem is kind of a 2D action/shooter/platformer hybrid where you play as little Juanito as him and his friend, Gluk try to protect old school retro video games from fiendish Clonocells. The gameplay itself is pretty standard. Your character moves left and right across the screen while shooting upwards at enemies dropping from above. There are actually several games on the App Store with this play style. You can also upgrade your weapons/power-ups and buy a few different costumes. What makes this game stand out is the visuals. There are times where it looks like you are playing an actual cartoon. Also, the fact that the story revolves around saving retro games. There are tons of nods to games of the past. Juanito Arcade Mayhem may not be perfect, but for old school gaming fans like myself, this is a hidden gem worth playing through.
Juanito Arcade Mayhem is also in this week’s SNAPP Roundup.
