(SNAPP Reviews aren’t really a full fledged game review as much as they are just a way for us to give you a quick “heads-up” on whether a certain game is good or not. It usually means that we haven’t finished the game yet, but have played a good enough chunk to know whether it’s worth your time/money.)

As every week passes, and we get another new crop of games, there’s always an “unsung hero”. A game that came out of nowhere that ends up taking more of your time than you expected.

The game that took me by surprise this week was, Better Not Die (by 4129Grey). This is actually the first I’ve heard of this developer/publisher. Looking at their library, this looks like only their second game on the App Store besides a stopwatch and heart monitor app.

Better Not Die is basically an avoidance game at its core. You play as a “depressed knight” and only you can survive him from his misery……….To be honest, there’s not much of a story in the game. I’m just going from the app description. That doesn’t matter though. What matters is the gameplay.

Basically, you are controlling your “depressed knight” with 3 buttons. Move LEFT, RIGHT, or JUMP. Your goal is to stay alive as long as possible while objects are falling from above. These usually consist of shurikens for some odd reason, but the further you get, light sabers (from what it looks like) start falling also. Yea, I know. Shurikens and light sabers falling in an endless medieval dungeon. No wonder the knight is depressed!!

The game itself isn’t fairly decent. But, what has kept me playing is the fact that you can collect coins and upgrade your health, agility, and your power-ups, freeze & shield. That’s kind of the hook for me. Without the ability to upgrade, I’d probably be bored with the game after a couple minutes.

(My high score so far.)

Better Not Die isn’t breaking any new ground. I would have loved to see a little more to the game like different characters or even backgrounds, but for what it is, Better Not Die is a pretty fun high score chaser.
