Brake or Break
By Meizi Games
I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for any kind of game with vehicles in it. It doesn’t matter if I’m racing them, customizing them, rubbing them down with baby oil with my shirt off. I love me some car games! I’m also a sucker for that sweet sweet pixel art. So, of course when I saw Brake or Break release, it was downloaded before I even got to the second screenshot.
Brake or Break was released on May 2nd, 2016 by indie developer, Meizi Games. This is their third game released on the App Store. Their other two games are decent titles, but aren’t anything like this one. I will say that Meizi does have a pretty cool looking racing game in the works right now called “Built for Speed”.
Anyway, back to the game. The thing with Brake or Break is that it’s a little different. It’s not what I originally expected. At first, I really didn’t like the game. It just seemed “backwards” to me, but once I got used to the controls, it turned out to be a decent little title.
So, in a nutshell, Brake or Break is pretty much an Endless Runner. The object is to just get as far as you can before you wreck your car. Your vehicle is constantly moving forward and the only controls you have is to tap the screen to brake. (See? The title of the game is coming into play here. Pretty witty huh?) It seems fairly simple at first, but once the wind starts coming into play and objects like beach balls and polar bears start getting thrown at you, it gets pretty tough to keep your ride in one piece.
You have a life bar for your vehicle up in the corner and every time you hit something or land upside-down, your meter goes down. Once you reach zero, it’s game over. There’s of course power-ups to collect along your way. These can be pick-ups that give you more “health” to keep your car in tack, or a number of crazy power-ups like the helicopter propeller that attaches to your roof and helps you cut through the wind. Like I said before, the wind plays a huge factor in each run and if for some reason you get caught upside-down, there is always a smiling tornado that’s following behind you to help flip you back on your wheels. The happy tornado is there to keep you from just riding your brakes the whole time and just inching forward. So, there’s this weird sense of urgency, yet you still have to manage braking a lot so you don’t end up spinning out of control.
There are 4 different terrains that are all randomly generated ranging from winter themed, to beach themed and there are 5 different vehicles to drive. All with their own stats and characteristics. You can also unlock different outfits for your driver. Not to mention, everything earns XP when in use and the more everything is leveled up, the more “prizes” you get to open up.
Brake or Break might not be for everybody and there are a ton of games somewhat similar to this on the App Store, but if your in the mood for a new Endless Runner and like games with vehicles in them, you probably couldn’t go wrong giving this one a try.
